The Grey Fox Variant, as tied by Art Flick, is a great favorite of mine on the Quashnet River and elsewhere. One could do worse than to follow Flick's advice and simplify one's dry fly choices to a light, a medium, and a dark variant - the Cream Variant, Grey Fox Variant, and Dun Variant. I like a 4x leader too for the bigger flies, and find that curve casts are easily executed by taking advantage of the greater air resistance of a variant. With practice the fly can be very precisely placed using the curve cast.
